The United States Merchant Marine Academy, also referred to as simply USMMA or Kings Point, is one of the five United States service academies, and it is located in Kings Point, which is a village in Nassau County, in the US state of New York, on the North Shore of Long Island, with a population of more than 5000 inhabitants, according to the 2000 census.
USMMA was established in 1942, when its current site was acquired, before that, training being made at temporary facilities. The Academy offers its students various educational programs through 6 departments - marine engineering, humanities, marine transportation, mathematics and science, naval science and physical education, the marine engineering and marine transportation departments being the largest ones.
USMMA's athletic teams are known as the Mariners and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the Landmark Conference and the Liberty League. Their distinctive colors are blue and gray.
Among the noteworthy graduates from USMMA, there are also: Lane Kirkland - Head of AFL-CIO, Alex Bonner - Emmy Award winning radio and television producer and broadcast executive, Robert H. Scarborough - first graduate to become a Vice Admiral in the United States Coast Guard, Vice Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, and William G. Schubert - captain, head of the U.S. Maritime Administration under President George W. Bush.
